What does a new concrete driveway involve?

A concrete driveway is a poured slab: the ground is graded and compacted, forms are set to shape the edges, and concrete is placed, leveled and finished by hand. It is a rigid, light-colored surface that holds a crisp edge and suits straight runs and curves alike.

Blacktip Construction installs concrete and stamped concrete driveways, patios and walkways for homes in West Palm Beach and across Palm Beach County. Stamped concrete gives a poured slab the look of brick, stone or tile, pressed in while the surface is still workable. Because we also set brick pavers, we can talk through both with you and help you pick the surface that fits how you use the space, rather than pushing one material.

Florida adds its own demands: strong sun, heat and heavy summer rain. Good drainage and a properly prepared base matter as much as the pour itself.

What is included

From forms to finish

Layout and forms

We mark out the driveway shape, set the edges and build forms so the slab holds a clean line, including curves.

Base preparation

The ground is graded and compacted before any concrete goes in, so the slab has a firm, even base to sit on.

Pouring and finishing

Concrete is placed, leveled and finished by hand to a surface that sheds water and gives tires and shoes some grip.

Control joints

Joints are cut or tooled into the slab at planned spacing so any cracking follows a straight, tidy line.

Curing and cleanup

The new slab is left to cure properly, the forms come off, and the site is cleaned up when the work is done.

Stamped concrete

Patterned mats press a brick, stone or tile texture into the fresh slab, so a poured driveway or patio gets a decorative finish.

How it works

Four steps to a finished driveway

  1. Talk it through

Tell us about the property, the size of the driveway and what you have there now. We look at the space together.

  2. Prepare the site

Any old surface is removed as needed, then the ground is graded, compacted and the forms are set.

  3. Pour and finish

Concrete is placed, leveled and finished, and control joints are added to guide any cracking.

  4. Cure and clean up

The slab is left to cure, the forms come off and we tidy the site. We tell you when it is ready to use.

Questions

Concrete driveway questions

How long before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?

Fresh concrete needs time to cure before it takes vehicle weight, and the exact wait depends on the mix, the weather and the thickness of the slab. In South Florida heat it sets up quickly, but we will tell you when your driveway is ready to use so you do not rush it.

Will my concrete driveway crack?

Concrete can crack as it dries and settles, which is why control joints are cut or tooled into the slab. They give the surface a planned place to crack, so any movement follows a straight line instead of wandering across the middle. Good base preparation and proper joint spacing reduce the odds of random cracking.

Can you pour concrete over my old driveway?

It depends on what is under it. Often the old surface has to come out so the new slab sits on a clean, compacted base. Cracked or sinking concrete is usually removed first. Tell us what you have now and we will talk through the options when we look at the site.

Do you do stamped concrete?

Yes. Stamped concrete is poured like a standard slab, then pressed with patterned mats while it is still workable to give it the look of brick, stone or tile. It suits driveways, patios and walkways. Tell us the look you want and we will talk through pattern options.

How is concrete different from brick pavers?

Concrete is a rigid, light-colored slab poured in place, while brick pavers are individual units laid on a prepared base. Each has trade-offs in look, upkeep and repairs, and the comparison above lays them out side by side.

Do you install concrete driveways in my town?
